The Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) was established in May 2019 and evolved from the Institute for Molecular Engineering, which was founded in 2011.
The PME integrates science and engineering to address global challenges from the molecular level up.
The PME’s rigorous academic and research programs are made possible through the University of Chicago’s unique partnership with Argonne National Laboratory.

Job Summary Reporting to the Building Administrator, the Dock Manager is responsible for overseeing all operations at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering shipping terminal inside the William Eckhardt Research Center.
The Dock Manager will ensure that cargo is handled safely and efficiently, often working closely with other members of the management team to develop new strategies for improving shipping/receiving operations.
Responsibilities Manages incoming and outgoing shipping activities to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and condition of shipments.
Works effectively with vendors/customers to schedule deliveries and the pick-up of returned merchandise.
Implements and drives process consistency and cross-functional collaboration utilizing continuous improvement methodology that results in process improvement and cost-saving initiatives.
Reviews shipping notices, bills of lading, invoices, orders, and other records to determine shipping priorities, work assignments, and shipping methods required to meet shipping and receiving schedules, utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates.
Calculates estimated costs associated with the shipping/delivery function and recommends appropriate alternatives.
Manages inventory and product loss control.
Inspects material handling equipment for defects and notifies maintenance personnel or contacts outside service facility for repair.
Manages cylinder gas, liquid dewar, and bulk gas resources for PME occupants in the ERC building, including purchasing, transport, installation, removal, and inventory control.
Provides supervision of assigned work groups in ensuring effective selection, retention, and performance management of shipping employees within a Union environment.
Benchmarks and set targets for overall shipping performance and personnel.
Ensures compliance with DOT and IATA regulations, including the review of daily driver’s log sheets, accident reporting, and investigation.
Follows and enforces all safety and security policies and procedures.
Ensures compliance with department, local, state, federal, and international guidelines and regulations.
Fosters positive working relationships.
Responds proactively to performance concerns, discipline, employee complaints, training deficiencies, and other employee relations matters.

Coordinates with the Budget and Accounting Office to facilitate appropriate financial allocations related to shipping, receiving, and bottled and liquid gas usage.
Provides regular shipping and receiving software training to the PME community.
Responsible for integration and usage of all dock-related software.
Maintains shipping and receiving activities and records.
Resolves related shipping, receiving, and distribution problems.
Coordinates with vendors and Budget to ensure that quality and pricing of supplies and equipment meet expectations.
Collaborates with manager regarding building management and maintenance.
Places and monitors work requests.
Supervises projects, and serves as liaison to central facilities staff and outside contractors.
Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
- Certifications: - Preferred Qualifications Education: A college or university degree.
Experience: Three years of relevant management experience.
Three or more years of management in a warehouse or distribution environment with increasing management responsibilities across multiple platforms.
Minimum one year working with transport and storage of hazardous substances, including gasses, chemicals, and flammables.
Certifications: DOT and IATA certified.
Technical Skills or Knowledge: Strong computer skills including knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
Demonstrated knowledge of shipping and receiving protocols and standards, including domestic and international freight shipments.
Demonstrated understanding of OSHA, DOT, and IATA regulations for hazardous materials, including cylinder gas, liquid dewar, and bulk gas, chemicals, and flammables.
Working knowledge of hand and power tools, including drills, hammers, saws, etc.
Manage and analyze large data sets.
