The Materials Engineer will join an existing team to support all of John Crane material needs worldwide with technology services, material analysis, material development, product development, and engineering technology.
This position will provide technical guidance in the development, quality, and testing of wear resistant and low friction materials for tribological applications in mechanical seals.
The materials of construction include metal alloys, superalloys, elastomers, polymers, carbons, ceramics, and hard coatings, and the review and analysis of new materials including in-house production, additive manufacturing & external supplier qualification.
The role requires a basic understanding of international mechanical test standards and regulatory compliance.
This engineering position will be responsible for producing and maintaining internal specifications for materials and will ensure that all materials meet quality standards as required by the company's internal and external customers.
Duties & Responsibilities 1) Perform necessary investigations to design and select appropriate tests or experiments needed to develop data for logical conclusions.
2) Conduct and report on a wide variety of experimental tasks, including (but not limited to) mechanical testing, chemical testing, material compatibility, microscopy, microstructure analysis, fractography, and corrosion assessments.
3) Own, operate and maintain a variety of laboratory equipment including (but not limited to) load frames, optical microscopes, SEM, FTIR, saws, polishers & hardness indentors.
4) Support local and global Quality department issues & creation of new procedures and standards which mitigate reoccurrence of issues or concerns.
5) Support local and global Field Engineers with issues observed in-service including fractography and failure analysis investigations with root cause analysis (RCA).
6) Provide technical support in the materials arena to internal and external customers, which may involve travel.
7) Develop, compose, and implement policies, procedures, and standards.
8) Utilize ingenuity and inventive thinking to reduce cost, increase performance, maximize profits, and optimize customer satisfaction for the products being sold into the marketplace.
9) Develop new sophisticated technical and analytical characterization technologies.

The Individual Required: 1) Minimum of BS in Material Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or comparable field of study.
2) 10+ years’ combined experience in Materials Science.
3) 5+ years’ combined experience in materials laboratory environment.
4) Detailed, hands-on, problem solver, with experience in manufacturing, process development, or application development.
5) Demonstrated history of strong project management, mentoring, and teaching skills.
6) Versed in the use and application of ASTM, SAE, ISO, and other industry standards.
7) Practical experience with metallography sample preparation and microscopy.
8) Demonstrated experience writing and reviewing reports to a professional standard.
Preferred: 1) Experience in the manufacture, development and analytical characterization of wear resistant ceramic materials including silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and tungsten carbide.
2) Experience in the manufacture, development and analytical characterization of polymers, elastomers, and/or metals and metal coatings.
3) Hands-on experience working with a scanning electron microscope, optical/polarizing microscopes, FTIR, mechanical testing load frames, and other analytical equipment.
4) Familiarity with regulatory compliances such as REACH, RoHS, WRAS, NSF-61, and FDA.
5) Familiarity with hard coating technologies such as HVOF, CVD, and PVD.
6) Hands-on experience with chemical compatibility and corrosion assessments.
7) Experience with Management of Change (MOC) and deviation request protocols.
