About the Senior Counsel, Food Law & Regulatory:
We are looking for an experienced attorney and professional in the area of food law and regulatory affairs who is inspired by our purpose to “bring the potential of people, nature and technology together to make life better.
” The Senior Counsel will report to and work closely with the VP & Associate General Counsel, Global Operations, to support and partner effectively with the Global Operations and Global Scientific & Regulatory Affairs teams in the US and globally.
The Senior Counsel will be a member of the Global Legal, Business Integrity and Government Affairs (GLBG) team.

The Senior Counsel, Food Law & Regulatory will be a key member of our GLBG team responsible for providing expert legal counsel and guidance on matters related to food law and regulatory compliance worldwide.
The Senior Counsel will work closely with various departments within the company to fulfill the responsibilities listed below and ensure that our products meet all applicable food safety and regulatory requirements.
This role requires a deep understanding of US and global food law and regulations, excellent legal research and analysis skills, the ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders, and the ability to work independently as well as effectively in a cross-functional, matrixed team.
Key responsibilities of the Senior Counsel, Food Law & Regulatory include:
Legal Compliance: Monitor and stay up to date with United States and international food regulations, standards, and guidelines that may impact the company's operations.
Regulatory Advice: Provide legal guidance and support to cross-functional teams, including Global Operations, Global Scientific & Regulatory Affairs, Government Affairs, R&D, marketing, quality assurance, and supply chain, to ensure product formulations and labeling comply with food laws and regulations.
Risk Assessment: Conduct legal risk assessments related to product development, labeling, and marketing, and provide proactive legal strategies to mitigate compliance risks.
Labeling and Claims: Review product labels and advertising materials to ensure they adhere to applicable regulations.
Product Recalls: Develop and oversee protocols for handling product recalls, provide legal support on active recalls working closely with the quality assurance team to minimize legal exposure and reputational damage.
Government Relations and External Counsel: Working with Global Scientific & Regulatory Affairs and Global Governmental Affairs, build and maintain relationships with regulatory agencies, industry associations, and external legal counsel to stay informed about regulatory changes and emerging issues.
Build relationships and a global network, and effectively manage the expense of external legal counsel in the area of food law and regulation.
Training: Develop and deliver training programs to educate internal teams on food law and regulations.
Litigation Support: Assist in managing and coordinating legal disputes and regulatory enforcement actions related to food products, including managing external counsel when necessary.
Policy Advocacy: Participate in industry advocacy efforts to shape food law and regulatory policy in the company's favor, working with trade associations and other stakeholders.
Qualified candidates will have/be:
Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent degree from an accredited law school
A background in biology, chemistry, or food science is preferred.
Active bar membership in good standing
Minimum of eight years of legal experience dedicated to food law and regulatory compliance
Strong knowledge of United States and international food regulations and standards
Excellent research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Effective communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders
Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to see the big picture and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Proven ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team
Good judgment and high integrity, with demonstrated appreciation of general business values and ethics.
