Job Description
The Senior Counsel – Global Therapeutics Legal, Medical Affairs position is responsible for developing legal strategy and direct support to the Medical Affairs and Health Economics Outcomes Research (“HEOR”) organization, as well as several products in the Specialty Franchise.
This position will provide counsel concerning a broad range of legal, regulatory and compliance issues, with a primary focus on FDA promotional regulations, the False Claims Act, the Anti-Kickback Statute, and HHS-OIG guidance.
Key Responsibilities:
Serving as lead counsel for our Medical Affairs and HEOR organization, and to select brands within the Specialty franchise, concerning a range of legal, regulatory and compliance issues concerning FDA regulations, the False Claims Act, the Anti-Kickback Statute, HHS-OIG guidance, consumer protection and competition law, among others.
Working cross functionally with Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, the Office of Ethics and Compliance, Marketing, and other departments to find solutions to meet business objectives consistent with the law, applicable policies/procedures, and AbbVie’s Code of Conduct.
Providing clear advice to clients and senior legal management on key priorities for Medical Affairs and HEOR organization, including medical and scientific engagement, addressing educational scientific gaps, evidence generation capabilities, and the support of enterprise growth goals.
Developing knowledge of Medical Affairs and HEOR organization and Specialty franchise and proactively guiding commercial, medical and regulatory clients related to same.
Staying up to date on developments in healthcare laws and guidelines, identifying unmet needs and future legal issues, and proactively proposing strategies to optimize outcomes and results for patients, providers, and the company, while managing risk.
Being committed to meeting patient unmet needs across AbbVie’s therapeutic areas and energized to rise to new challenges and envision creative solutions.
Serving as recognized source, for the business as well as other attorneys, regarding innovative ideas in complex areas of law, business, or technology, particularly those impacting the Medical Affairs and HEOR organization.
This position reports to the Associate General Counsel, Specialty & Medical Affairs.

Law degree from an ABA accredited law school and in good standing with the state bar of the jurisdiction in which your office will be located (or ability to gain licensure in the state in which your office will be located).
Minimum 7+ years of relevant experience (previous pharma experience a plus).
Developing proficiency in practice area.
Experience with pharmaceutical/biotech companies required, and educational background in applicable scientific field is a plus.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal issues in a simple, understandable manner with colleagues across the company.
Strong collaborative skills, able to build partnerships internally and with external partners at all levels of the organization.
Strong organization and time management skills with flexibility, creativity, resourcefulness to successfully prioritize and manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously.
