Job Summary ACCO Brands is seeking a Senior Counsel, Marketing to join our dynamic legal team.
This is a hybrid role based in Lake Zurich, Illinois and will report to the Vice President and Associate General Counsel for the Americas region.
This role provides support and guidance to the marketing, sales and product teams and identifies risks, solves problems and helps the business acquire and maintain customers and expand and improve product offerings in a creative and compliant way.
Responsibilities Legal Oversight: Providing ongoing legal support for the Americas business’s multi-channel marketing and advertising initiatives, helping to drive and enable business strategy with respect to innovation and marketing and advertising claims development and substantiation while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards.
Intellectual Property Protection: Safeguard ACCO Brands’ intellectual property assets, including trademarks and copyrights, and manage infringement enforcement actions when necessary.
Contract Negotiation: Draft and negotiate a variety of agreements related to marketing partnerships, promotions, co-branding, licensing, and creative services as well as general commercial agreements.
Risk Mitigation: Counseling business clients and stakeholders on any risks and opportunities relating to innovation plans, advertising claims and support, marketing and advertising strategies, campaigns and challenges.
Market Research: Stay abreast of industry trends and legal developments, providing proactive legal advice to support strategic decision-making.
Partner with marketing and sales teams to implement new programs and/or requirements as necessary.
Policy Development: Contribute to the development and implementation of internal policies and guidelines related to marketing activities.
Develop training materials and prepare presentations used to educate and train the Marketing function on legal process, compliance and risk associated with advertising claims, various marketing initiatives, and other relevant topics.
Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications Expertise in marketing law, with a deep understanding of regulatory requirements, intellectual property issues, and industry best practices.
Strong negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and provide timely and practical legal advice.
The successful candidate should hold a law degree from an accredited U.
S.
law school and be a member of the bar, although it is not necessary for the attorney to be a member of any specific state bar.
Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, with experience in the consumer goods space or related industries.
Experienced professional who has unquestionable integrity, credibility, and character, displaying high moral and ethical behavior at all times.
Excellent judgment and a proven ability to make decisions and/or recommendations to senior leadership.
Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills, including the ability to successfully interact with and engage employees at all levels of the organization in a matrixed environment.
Can effectively build and establish credibility through an honest and direct communication style.
Consistently recognized and respected as a team player and valued business partner.
Willing to “roll up his/her sleeves” and do whatever it takes to accomplish team objectives.
Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively synthesize and communicate about complex situations and concepts and provide understandable and actionable legal advice.
Proven organizational and project management skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities independently and meet deadlines under pressure.
Relentless sense of urgency, with a “can-do” attitude to drive results, but the judgment to know when to strike a balance for the good of the team.
